back to basics

As part of our three-themed series, here are some tips that will help your brand get back to basics when creating content.

  1. Be Genuine

As much as we want to believe that blog readers appreciate our clever puns, they really just want to read something real. People want to be informed with content that is relevant to them. It’s our job to provide them with that. A great tip is to write as if you were having a real-life conversation with a new friend. Your goal is interaction–providing a connection–and people are more likely to engage with a human than with a robot. Give the people what they want. Be real.

  2. Find A Balance

As writers, we like to believe we naturally creative beings. Because of this we have a tendency to push organization to the end of our to-do list–believing, at times, that inspiration will happen naturally. However, to be a successful content developer, you have to stay ahead of the game. The only way to do this is to have a system. Find ways to foster your creativity. For example, I find Twitter lists to be an amazing way to group content together in a way that inspires me. Any time I have a new client, the first thing I do is follow any resource I feel could help with content leads, and group in them in a list on Twitter. The goal is to make it easier to create, inspire, and interact.

  3. Remember Who You Are Writing For

It seems so basic, but perhaps we need a lesson in why we started creating content in the first place. Here’s a hint: it wasn’t to impress the search engines alone. Don’t write without direction. Your job is not just to write, but more importantly, to listen. Be aware of what your audience needs to hear, and create content that reflects that need. ANd remember, your job isn’t done once you hit “post” on your blog. It’s so important to keep the conversation going.

We’re bringing it back to the basics with this one. Sometimes, we all need a reminder of why we started writing content in the first place. And speaking of interaction and connections, please comment below if you have additional tips. We love hearing from our readers!
